THE LEARNING LIBRARY
Start with these practical guides, then use the calculators to explore your own assumptions.
Separate essential expenses from discretionary spending. List Social Security, pension income, and any other reliable income separately from portfolio withdrawals.
The difference between spending and reliable income is the gap your savings or other resources need to cover. Add irregular costs such as home repairs, family support, and travel.
Ask: Which income sources change with inflation? Which continue for a surviving spouse? Which amounts are before tax?
Losses early in retirement can be especially damaging when withdrawals force you to sell investments. Two portfolios with similar average returns can have different outcomes when withdrawals occur.
Explore spending flexibility, accessible reserves, and a diversified investment approach with a qualified professional. Our longevity calculator uses a constant return and does not measure this sequence-of-returns risk.
A conversion generally moves money from a traditional retirement account to a Roth account. The taxable portion increases income for the conversion year.
Consider current and future tax rates, the source of funds used to pay taxes, your time horizon, and potential Medicare premium effects. Nondeductible IRA basis can introduce pro-rata tax calculations.
Our illustration assumes the entire conversion is taxable. It does not model progressive brackets, state taxes, RMDs, or Medicare effects. Have a tax professional review an actual conversion before proceeding.
IRMAA is an income-related adjustment to Medicare Part B and Part D premiums. It does not change the formula for your gross Social Security retirement benefit, although Medicare deductions can affect the amount deposited.
Medicare generally uses tax information from two years earlier. For 2026 premiums, that usually means 2024 income. A qualifying life-changing event may support a request for a new determination.
Read CMS's 2026 premium information →Annuities differ in liquidity, fees, payment terms, survivor options, inflation protection, and surrender restrictions. Lifetime payment guarantees depend on contract terms and the issuing insurer's claims-paying ability.
A payout rate is not an investment return. Payments may include a return of principal. An income-benefit base may differ from the amount available to withdraw.
Ask for a carrier illustration showing costs, guarantees, liquidity, and single-life versus joint-life options. Our tool is not a carrier quote.
Do not send account numbers, Social Security numbers, or sensitive documents through a general inquiry form.
